Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme (ACAS)
ACAS provides a frame work for assessing the carbon emissions from airports and reducing the emissions associated with their operations with the final goal of carbon neutrality (zero net emissions).
Purpose The Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme is designed to allow airports to show commitment to the environment through the voluntary reduction of CO2 emissions associated with their operations. It is hoped that the scheme will eventually lead to carbon neutral operations. Benefits As a participant in the scheme, you will be able to demonstrate to stakeholders a tangible commitment to reduction of GHG emissions. Because reductions in emissions are audited by an independent third party, they carry credibility and will enhance the environmental credentials of the participants at a time where the environmental impact of airport operations is under increasing scrutiny. It is also likely that the extensive review of energy use during the mapping process will bring about bottom-line benefits in terms of more efficient energy use. Features In order to assist you with compliance to the scheme, we can assist with Mapping Stage: Independent verification of the Carbon Footprint Report (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) in accordance with ISO14064 and accreditation requirementsOptimisation Stage: Independent verification of Scope 3 emissions in accordance with ISO14064 and accreditation requirements. The Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme The scheme was launched in June 2009 and is devised by independent consultancy WSP on behalf of ACI-Europe, which has a membership of over 400 airports. Any airport that is a member of ACI-Europe can join the scheme. As of November 2010, there are 31 airports participating that together account for around 25% of European airport traffic. The scheme consists of four stages: Mapping: Measurement of direct CO2 emissions from airport operations and submission of an independently verified carbon footprint report
Reduction: Establish carbon management system, set targets for reduction, monitor and reduce annual emissions in line with commitments
Optimisation: Widen scope of carbon footprint to include third party emissions and engage with them to reduce emissions
Neutrality: Offset the remaining emissions to achieve carbon neutral operations for all emissions over which the airport has control
